The Right Skills in the Right Order
The WEX Skill-Building Curriculum is the result of over 15 years of classroom-based research involving hundreds of teachers and thousands of students. The curriculum breaks down the complex challenge of teaching writing into a sequence of clearly defined skills.
These skills have been:
- selected to include only those proven to make the greatest impact on writing proficiency.
- sequenced to drive student development most rapidly.
- unified into a seamless curriculum that steadily builds skills from grades 3-12.
The Tools to make it work
The following curricular materials are available for teachers implementing The WEX Method™ in their classrooms.
WEX Teacher's Guides
WEX Teacher’s Guides combine guidance for teachers with carefully sequenced lesson plans to follow. Simple, practical instructions in the Teacher’s Toolkit section of the Teacher’s Guides show how to establish the mindset, habits, and classroom routines that make the WEX Method™ so effective. Daily lesson plans are written to engage students in fun and purposeful practice of each skill in the curriculum. Each Teacher’s Guide also includes a Grading and Assessment section.
Classroom Clipboard
The Classroom Clipboard keeps right at hand the materials a teacher uses to track student progress and focus on immediate priorities.
Implementation Support Kit
The Implementation Support Kit provides principals and literacy specialists with the tools to collaborate with teachers and lead them, focusing supervision on those elements that make the greatest impact on student performance.
Student Journal
Student Journals are light, portable notebooks with the WEX Journal Sticker on the inside cover. The WEX Journal Sticker maps out the sequence of skills for each grade level and is a handy visual guide that helps teachers and students track progress, skill-by-skill. WEX Student Journals are available for each grade level and are formatted to make daily practice and revision easier for students.
Student Journal Stickers
The WEX Journal Sticker provides an overview of the scope and skill sequence in WEX. Students begin by learning the skills that have the greatest immediate impact on their writing, then move steadily toward mastering gradually more sophisticated skills. Teachers use the Journal Sticker to keep track of student progress in the writing skills.
